KAWMET W16 (13.5 kW) (740x435) Cast Iron Fireplace Door
KAWMET W16 (13.5 kW) (740x435) is a complete firebox front: a cast iron door with frame, glass and ash pan, 740 × 435 mm overall. The set is matched to the KAWMET W16 (13.5 kW) fireplace insert — it is not a bare leaf casting that needs the rest sourced separately.
The casting is grade 200 grey cast iron, the same grade KAWMET uses for insert bodies. In a firebox what matters is not impact strength but behaviour under repeated heating and cooling: cast iron expands predictably, so leaf and frame stay matched for years. The glazing is Schott ROBAX® heat-resistant ceramic rated to 760 °C.

Which insert it fits
The manufacturer assigns this set to the KAWMET W16 (13.5 kW) insert. Every KAWMET series has its own frame outline, so a door from another model will not seat in the opening — even at the same nominal output.
For a masonry firebox the insert model is irrelevant: the opening decides. Measure it and compare with the 740 × 435 mm above — the opening must not exceed the door outline, or the frame has nothing to rest on.
What a closed, glazed firebox gives you
More heat from the same wood. The glass returns part of the radiation to the combustion chamber; the temperature rises, wood gases burn off more completely and less energy escapes up the flue.
Fire under control. Air supply is adjustable, so the burn rate is your decision rather than the chimney draught’s.
A calmer room. A closed firebox keeps smoke out of the room and cuts off the path for sparks.
Other uses
- Closing an open fireplace — the most common reason to buy a door separately, and the conversion with the largest gain.
- A masonry fireplace built from scratch — the set as a ready-made front.
- Tiled stoves — replacing or completing the front of a heat-storage stove.
- Masonry barbecues — enclosing an outdoor firebox.
In each case the measured opening decides, not the model name.
Installation
The set weighs 21.7 kg, so it is seated by two people, or with the frame supported while it is positioned. The weight that makes installation awkward is an advantage in service: it damps vibration as the door closes, and the hot casting keeps radiating long after the fire dies down — the door becomes another heating surface rather than just a barrier.
Why ceramic rather than ordinary heat-resistant glass
Schott ROBAX® withstands 760 °C, but more importantly it tolerates the difference between the hot centre of the pane and the cool edge at the frame. Toughened glass cracks under that load. Ceramic also does not cloud with age: a pane that looks permanently dulled is usually just coated with soot from damp wood.
Care
Clean the glass cold — with fireplace glass cleaner, or a damp cloth and a little wood ash; ash is a mild abrasive and handles deposits better than most detergents. Do not scrub the cast iron wet: sweep the ash away and wipe it with a dry cloth. Glass that soils quickly almost always means damp wood or burning with the air supply nearly shut — not a fault of the glass.
